Guide to Casino Games
Inside a modern day casino, one would expect to find a variety of games on which to play, gamble, and resultantly win or lose. Gamblers have the choice as to whether they bet money on games of chance, or games of skill – both of which however ensure that the ‘house’ (the banker, and ultimately the casino) have a greater advantage and greater chance of winning.
One of the most popular casino games of chance are slot machines; although it is often argued that there is an artistry in successful ‘slots’ play, it is essentially based on random spins of the reels. In attempting to win on a slot machine, and individual will firstly place coins into the device (the bet), and then either pull a lever on the side of the machine, or alternatively push a button in order to begin spinning reels (usually three), each containing an assortment of symbols. Therefore, in order to win money from the machine, the player must match up identical symbols. Slot machines are now so commonplace in casinos that various styles and versions offer contrasting benefits, rules and game-play to potential players, and since the 1990’s, machines have been styled on hit game shows, Hollywood movies, and celebrities, in order to garner the interest of casino goers.
Casino games with heightened emphasis on skill are realised through poker, and blackjack. Both, like slot machines, are among the most popular casino games and generate huge income for venues each year. Texas Hold Em’ poker is perhaps the most common form of poker found on casino floors – it allows individuals to play against not only the banker, but against other competitors; adding to the degree of tension and competitiveness. Games such as poker and blackjack last much longer than the average play on a slot machine, mainly due to the skill and concentration required to become successful. The latter game has often encouraged players to partake in ‘card-counting’, in which gamblers will attempt to keep track of which cards have been dealt, therefore anticipating future cards, and allowing players to schedule how much shall be gambled in various stages of the game. Methods such as these are complex and require fixation, especially in the intense atmosphere of the casino.
